Careers Plan – Year 7 (2026-27)

YEAR 7 CAREERS AIM: to encourage students to explore their interests and motivations.

RATIONALE: This year is viewed as a foundational stage in their career journey and the focus is on their understanding of employability skills and directly relating this to their character curriculum. This allows students to gain a more complete understanding of how both careers and character education are linked and prepare them for life beyond school, building their careers vocabulary so that they can express their interests.

1. .CAREERS SESSIONS: My Career Readiness

   In their fortnightly careers sessions, Year 7 students will work on their self-awareness with regards to their career aspirations. They will focus on what skills and strengths they already have, which they’d like to develop, and how the schools character curriculum will help them to work on that. As part of this unit, they will complete a career-readiness online questionnaire (the FSQ) so that our careers lead can plan appropriate careers activities and interventions where needed.

1. .CAREERS SESSIONS: Diversity in the workplace

   In their fortnightly careers sessions, Year 7 students will be introduced to the Equality Act (2010), protected characteristics and the value that diversity can bring to a workplace.

   Through these sessions, they will understand that the character strengths of compassion, open-mindedness and respect are also employability skills.

   In their fortnightly careers sessions, Year 7s will gain a fuller understanding of the key terms that they will come across during their career journey at Wrotham School. This includes sessions focussed on defining university, apprenticeships and having the opportunity to talk in small groups with our sixth formers about what sixth form is and why they made that choice.

1. .CAREERS SESSIONS: The future labour market – creative project

   In their fortnightly careers sessions, Year 7 students’ main focus will be on understanding that the character strengths that the school encourages and values are also employability skills. They will be introduced to the ‘future labour market’ and take part in a creative project, designing a solution to a common workplace problem.

   Through these sessions, they will understand that the character strengths of compassion are also employability skills.

2. Workplace Experience: MOVE IT 2027 – Dance Day Trip

   Open to all students in Years 7, 8, and 9 to expose students to the wider professional dance world. It offers a fantastic experience, presenting students to career paths in the dance world, networking opportunities, live performances, practical dance sessions and stalls from top dance schools and vendors. Students can watch live performances, network with dance colleges and schools, and participate in dance classes led by industry professionals.

1. .CAREERS SESSIONS: Career Decisions

   In their fortnightly careers sessions, Year 7 will consider the fact that careers decisions are about choosing how a job might impact their wider life. For example, they will think about the impact of travel, different working environments and where they would like to work.

   Through these sessions, they will understand that the character strengths of motivation and resilience are also employability skills. They will also learn that careers decisions need to consider more factors than simply the wage or job title.

2. EXPERIENCE OF THE WORKPLACE: Hampton Court Palace

   Year 7 students have the opportunity to join the History Department with a trip to Hampton Court Palace. Before and after the visit to this workplace, students are introduced to the importance of heritage sites to tourism and our local and national economy. On the visit, they are set the challenge of speaking to volunteers and employees to ask them about their jobs and responsibilities before feeding it back to their groups.

   In their fortnightly careers sessions, Year 7 will explore different career sectors and specifically those related to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). These will act as preparation and reflection time on the MEP Ltd experience of an engineering workplace. 

   Through these sessions, they will understand that the character strengths of motivation and resilience are also employability skills.

2. EXPERIENCE OF THE WORKPLACE: Think like an Engineer

   Year 7 students will be introduced to the wide range of careers within the engineering sector with the help of MEP Ltd an award-winning engineering specialist servicing Aerospace, Defence, Space and Medical clients and based in Aylesford. Students will be introduced to a careers project and encouraged to understand the design process and the importance of creativity and communication.
