Careers Plan – Year 11 (2026-27)

YEAR 11 CAREERS AIM: In Year 11 careers education, students make their plans and applications for post-16 destinations.

RATIONALE: The focus of this year is ensuring that Year 11 students have positive post-16 destinations and that they have the time and support to achieve this in a way that means they are empowered to make those decisions themselves with an understanding of all of the available routes.

1. .CAREERS SESSIONS: My Career Readiness

   During this term, Year 11 students will be prepared for the decisions they will be making and have a clear understanding of the support that they can expect this year. They will be taught what to expect from their one-to-one personal careers guidance sessions, and how to prepare. The application timeline and process will be explained, along with a clear guide to qualification levels and why they are important. One session will be dedicated to giving students advice on how to make the most of an open evening.

2. Maidstone University Fair

   Wrotham students have been kindly invited to attend Maidstone University Fair in September.

   Maidstone Grammar School will be hosting around 50 exhibitors at the event, representing a wide range of UK universities plus some local colleges and apprenticeship organisations. The following institutions have confirmed their attendance.

   The event provides an opportunity to find out more about the range of education and study options available to students after leaving school, as well as the chance to meet representatives and get information about their institutions, courses, entry requirements and funding. We find that the event is particularly valuable in encouraging students to start thinking about their future pathways, even if they are not yet sure what they would like to do.

1. .CAREERS SESSIONS: Kent Choices

   Year 11 students will have the opportunity to talk to sixth form student panels, asking them about their experiences of applying for their post-16 places and how they made their decisions. They will also have the opportunity to ask more about level 3 study and the differences from GCSE.

   For the majority of the term, they will be working on their Kent Choices profiles, setting up their accounts ready to apply for sixth form, college and study programmes.

   In this term’s careers sessions, Year 11 students will continue with their Kent Choices applications. They will also explore different ways of gaining experience that would help them with their career decisions: volunteering and virtual work experience.

   Year 11 students will use the careers fair to speak to providers about their offers, as well as the employers about how they made their decisions and what their GCSE results day experiences meant for their career journeys.
