YEAR 11 CAREERS AIM: In Year 11 careers education, students make their plans and applications for post-16 destinations.

RATIONALE: The focus of this year is ensuring that Year 11 students have positive post-16 destinations and that they have the time and support to achieve this in a way that means they are empowered to make those decisions themselves with an understanding of all of the available routes.

Term 1

  1. .CAREERS SESSIONS: How to research your choices

    The focus of this term’s sessions are to build on work in Year 10, and support Year 11 with their decision making. Students explore the purpose of open evenings, how to prepare for them and how to follow up any questions they may have after attending them. During this term, they are are also given copies of KCC’s choices magazine with guidance about making choices and a list of local post-16 providers’ open evenings.

  2. Destination STEM: Careers Mentoring

    Year 11, 12 and 13 students are invited to sign up for a mentoring scheme organised by STEM Learning. Students sign up for the secure and moderated online platform, answer some questions about their interests and they get to choose from five suggested mentors, all of whom work in a wide variety of STEM roles. Architects, doctors, astronomers, geologists, economists, data scientists, web designers and much, much more have made themselves available to give careers advice and information over a 10 week period. Students can ask about life after school, including education, university, apprenticeships, or preparing for employment. They can discuss STEM career options, applications and interviews, job hunting, study skills and more.

  3. Guidance interviews

    This term, Year 11 students will have their one-to-one guidance interview with our level 6-qualified careers adviser, Mrs Hollinshead. Students and their parents/carers will be notified before the meeting via email, with information about what to expect and recommendations on how to prepare.

  4. Sixth Form Open Evening 1st October 2025

    Year 11 students are given time with their tutors to explore the different subjects on offer at Wrotham Sixth Form and how to decide whether level 3 study is for them. They then have the opportunity (along with students from other schools) to visit all of the subject teachers  and some of our current students and ask them questions about the courses and life in the sixth form. During open evening, our trainee careers adviser, Mrs Hollinshead, is available for drop-in appointments with students and their parents.

Term 2

  1. .CAREERS SESSIONS: Post 16 Application Support Sessions and Assemblies

    Year 11 students are introduced to Kent Choices for You – the online portal to all post-16 courses in Kent. Throughout this term, they will have access to computer rooms and they will receive step-by-step guidance from the Year 11 Team on how to navigate the site, complete their profiles and send applications.

    Students will also be using the careers information on Morrisby (our online careers platform) which has live, up-to-date information about different job roles and the routes into them. It also has live apprenticeship vacancy listings, which are automatically updated through the year as well as access to webinars about specific careers.

  2. ASSEMBLY: Making Post-16 Applications

    Ed Panting, our Engagement Officer at The Education People, will talk to our Year 11 students about the post-16 application process. He will introduce them to the Kent Choices platform, give them advice about writing and making applications – especially focusing on the importance of having a plan B. He will talk about his organisation’s role in supporting young people and their families.

    Year 11 students explore a range of vocational and technical options, but focus on how to apply for and find apprenticeships at post-16 and post-18. Sessions include comparing the benefits and drawbacks of academic routes and university vs vocational and apprenticeships.

Term 4

  1. Apprenticeship Academy

    A six-week programme run online by a level 6 careers advisor, Jess Pieri RCDP. This is a weekly session, held on Wednesdays from 4.30-6pm for six weeks, and is designed as a bootcamp to take students through the process of choosing, finding, applying, interviewing and managing their apprenticeship applications. Each weekly session has a specific focus and is supported by a current degree-level apprentice and an employer who offers an apprenticeship programme – these speakers will be available to answer questions. Jess is then available to offer advice, check CVs and answer questions via email. This is a service for which the school has subscribed and links will be emailed to students and parents/carers at the appropriate time in the year.

    This programme runs in Terms 1 for Year 13, Term 4 for Year 11 and 13, and Term 6 for Year 10 and Year 12.

  2. Careers Fair 2026

    Wrotham School’s Careers Fair has gone from strength to strength, building on our relationships with local and national employers, apprenticeship providers, colleges and universities. The fair will feature specialised activities to support our Year 9, 10, 11 and Sixth Form students to make informed decisions about the important transitions they face.

    This year, we again welcome our neighbouring school Grange Park School to join our careers fair. Grange Park is a specialist school for children and young people with autism spectrum condition (ASC) from 9-19.
